Racism: It’s What’s Wrong With America…uhm, Not so Much.

By jen

While hitting my Google Feeds this morning I hit BMEWS to see what Drew was talking about this morning and found this entry. I have been pondering how to address this whole issue without sounding like a hysteric with too much coffee in her system so I decided after reading his entry that I need to just do it. So here it goes…

Barry O’s speech accomplished a few things this week and his comments since have brought to light a few more attitudes he seems to harbor. Whether he was addressing race to cover his ass about Jerry “Goddamn America” Wright, which is what any thinking person in this country believes, or if he was just moving up the date on a speech he had planned to deliver about race in this country, one thing is certain… he succeeded in stirring up a racial shit storm.

Yes, his approval ratings have suffered as a result of the eloquent but shameless rationalizing of his relationship with Rev. Wright. That said, Obama did manage to take the attention away from his startling ineptitude when it comes to the war in Iraq and national security in general. Is it a good trade off? Time will tell, but for the moment the country is talking about race.

I have been ranting and raving at my friends for the last few months over the how the race card was being dropped more and more frequently. Simply put, you can call white folks, especially the ones who firmly believe they harbor no racism, racists for so long before they get pissed and say, “Fuck you.”

Most Americans are not overly moved one way or another by racial issues unless they are living in the midst of crisis caused by a particular ethnic group. Homeowners in middle class neighborhoods get pissed as their property values goes down and crime spikes when HUD decides to take over a floundering apartment community and turn it into a housing project. People living in areas flooded with illegal aliens tend to get pissed really quickly about the quality of their schools going to hell because half the kids attending do not speak english.

Speaking of illegals, we need to realize this discussion Barry O started with America has zero to do with any race other than blacks. My fellow Latinos need to understand they are not the right color to be included in this discussion. This is about the horrible discrimination of blacks in our society today, us beige folks need to get in fucking line.

There is a reason for this exclusion, an obvious one. They do not like us, we breed faster and with the exception of the illegals just wanting to stay and work, there isn’t much screaming and hating Whitey going on from the Latinos. It is one thing to protest and bitch about being unable to work without a green card. It is another thing entirely to listen to either Barry O or Jerry W lecturing on the plight of the black man as though he were still forced to sit in the back of the bus and not drink out of public water fountains.

Let’s get a little perspective here. Barry O is not running for president of the Rotary Club. He is running for President of the United States of America. If we were such a backward, racist nation, he would sweeping the floors in the US Senate, not speaking on it. One of the richest women in the world, Oprah Winfrey, is a black! This is further sweetened by the fact she is also a member of Jerry’s congregation. Robert L. Johnson founder of B.E.T. took a 15k loan and some hard work and turned into into a 3 Billion dollar corporation.

As a black person in America there are special loans to start businesses. The US Government gives special treatment to Black owned companies competing for contracts. There are countless scholarship, grants, and programs specifically to get Black people educated. The only thing keeping Black Americans from succeeding is motivation. The government has done everything short of filling out the paperwork and taking the college courses for them. (Unfortunately the liberal wing of our government has also worked tirelessly to keep Blacks poor and dependent, but I will address that later.)

Oprah, and Mr. Johnson along with Condi Rice and Colin Powell all share something in common. That something is what all highly successful people have and it has nothing to do with the color of their skin. Highly successful people are not wealthy and accomplished because they need to be. They succeed because they want it and are willing to do the work it takes to get it.

I have long ago lost any empathy or sympathy I had for the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements in this country. I am rapidly getting there with gays in this country as well. The tipping point for me is always the same. If you are being treated poorly for no reason and being denied equal rights and equal opportunity then you deserve my attention and my support. The moment you go from wanting to be equal to wanting to be special you lose me and you lose all credibility. Why does anyone get to be special based on nothing other than their skin color, their gender, or who they choose to rub their naughty bits against? People who do extraordinary things get special treatment and none of those special privileges should come from the federal government.

I for one am sick and fucking tired of this Political Correctness Cancer eating away at our society. The only people benefiting from it are groups and countries trying to fuck us over. We cannot even protect our own national security for fear that some racial group living in our own country might feel bad about it. The rest of the world laughs at us over this shit and rightfully so.

When a man running for the highest office in the land can say things like “typical white person” and get a free pass on it, things are way fucked up. Imagine Hillary Clinton or John McCain getting on tv and saying “they are just being typical Black people.” Can you imagine the outrage? Keith Olbermann might have to start cutting himself on his program just to cope with the moral outrage. Andrew Sullivan would be frothing at the mouth and overcome with something gay and hysterical.

The days of being able to say white people have it better and get all the opportunities are over. I assure you being a poor white person in this country is harder than being a poor black one. There are no special loan programs to start businesses. There are no special education funds and grants. There is no way to send your kids to college if you simply do not have the money to do it and they are anything other than extraordinary students.

Job security use to be a white thing… not so much anymore. If you are a minority or a female it is far harder to lose your job than it is for a white male. All a woman has to do is start accusing a man who pissed her off of being inappropriate and he is toast. All a Black person has to do is say they are being discriminated against and voila, HR is shitting itself trying to get rid of the problem.

I kind of fall in a category that more and more people are falling into these days. I am bi-racial and by that I mean white and something else. Bi-racial is one of those stupid words that makes no sense at all. This is America and by virtue of the fact we have historically populated ourselves with immigrants from countless nations most of us here are Bi-Racial. But the PC police tell us this a term used for a person with a white parent and a black parent. The rest of us mongrels just have to wait for a better word.

My mother is French, my father is Mexican which makes me Frexican or Fratino? (Apparently it makes me Lebanese because that is how I seem to get identified, but that is another blog entry.) I am one of the folks who gets a sort of middle ground look at the race issues between whites and blacks. Why? Because I am neither. To be honest I didn’t know I was not white until I moved to San Antonio as a 4th grader and suddenly had a label. Where I am from you are either Black or White. The latter being a catch all for everything from Mexican to Asian. There I was though, in elementary school and being called a Spic, wetback, and a beaner. Not exactly something you are equipped to deal with at 9 but something I nonetheless endured and learned to associate with idiot white children of idiot white parents.

I told my friend Kat this earlier and she started laughing, not at the remarks but at the absurdity of calling me any of those things. For shit’s sake I do not even speak Spanish! Her imitation of Jennifer responding to this was, “Are you talking to me? Spic? Are you serious? Where is my Gucci purse? I need to go get a pedicure.”

I will be honest with you about all this. I was far more bothered by not being Mexican enough for the kids in school whom I was lumped in with. There was no end to the shit I took from the Mexican kids because I couldn’t speak Spanish. To this day I am still everyone’s favorite coconut; brown on the outside, white on the inside.

We are sitting in a country where you would be hard pressed to find a true white person. Someone who can trace their ancestors on both sides and find not a single person a little more brown than the rest, be they Italian, Latino, or Black. So basically the whole goddamn thing is ridiculous. We are a unique country with a unique set of racial dynamics. Where else in the world do so many different races live together in relative harmony? Yes I said harmony. We work together, eat together, send out kids to the same schools, and we worship in church together.

Am I saying there is no racism left in this country? Of course not. There is plenty of it to go around and not just for the Blacks. Barry O was not wrong about Americans needing to have an open and honest conversation about race in our society. He was wrong in choosing as his spiritual adviser and close personal friend a belligerent racist. There is nothing he or Jerry W. can say to make me believe shouting anti-American and anti-white rhetoric is going to somehow uplift Blacks. It serves only to further animosity and foster a sense of entitlement.

When a society of people lose the ability to speak the simple truth for fear of being labeled a racist it doesn’t serve the greater good. Hate crime legislation does not make hate crimes less likely. Affirmative action does not make the work place more productive or hospitable. Welfare doesn’t help a single Black mother get out of poverty by encouraging her to work and better her life. Welfare is just a way to keep people dependent and eventually kills the part of them which wants to succeed. Increasing government programs geared specifically toward elevating minorities is not going to make racism go away.

What makes racism go away is personal responsibility. Something that is sorely lacking in all races in this great country. I am my brother’s keeper may be in scripture, but there is a big difference between that sentiment and being an enabler and a fosterer of mediocrity.

The left has set us on a course of social destruction that I am not sure the majority of us will weather. It takes a village goes the saying. I disagree. The village is falling apart at this point. Too many people have abdicated their power to the village and we are now reaping the fruit of a bad decision.

We are firmly into our third generation of victim mentality. This started with the Boomers, children of America’s greatest generation who took the first steps away from personal responsibility by tossing away the importance of traditional values and snubbing their noses at the very things that defined their parents.

They gave birth to Generation X, my generation and a sorry excuse for adults the majority of us are. We were a generation of teenagers who slept together before we were married, saw little value in going to church, and really didn’t respect our parents. Not all of us of course, but it was the general attitude. The changes our parent’s generation caused with their Flower Power and if it feels good do it attitude of the sixties had given us high divorce rates and recreational drugs as a grand prize.

We were not to be outdone, we took the boomer’s arrogance and disregard for self reliance and ran with it. Ran all the way to rehab and therapy. My generation didn’t revere great statesmen and great thinkers, we revered Madonna and polyester. A great many men in my generation are pieces of shit, sorry but it is true. Can you really expect anything else though? Their fathers were New Age men. Sensitive and in touch with their emotions. So in touch they freely gave their balls to their wives who eagerly took them and then dropped the kids off in daycare on their way to work. My generation is the first generation raised by Daycare centers.

Us Gen X’ers are all grown up now and have teenagers of our own… welcome to the world of Generation Y. Children born in an age of AIDS, socially acceptable drug use, sexualized from a young age by living in a world using sex to sell everything from cars to cheeseburgers.

Is it really a wonder so many of them are not only sexually active but more sexually experienced than their parents who were not exactly virgins until marriage? Rainbow parties and bi-curious became household words. What did Gen X parents do to stop this? We gave them condoms and told them to be careful. We never once told them to knock it off. That would be bad and we want them to be our friends. When they cannot behave in class we do what? We give them a condition and place a nice fat label. ADHD is probably on the health history form of half the boys in your kid’s class.   We make excuses for their misbehavior. We tolerate their disrespect and then wonder why they are so fucked up.  (JenNote:  I realize that there are many children in this country who suffer from true disorders like ADHD and forms of Autism.  There are also kids who are on meds simple because mom and/or dad cannot seem to discipline them and doctors tend to just hand these meds out like candy.  This comment is a generalization and not meant to paint all kids on meds as products of lazy parents.)

Where is the racial issue in all this, Jennifer? There isn’t one. What makes our society fucked can be spread equally across all races. Stupid knows no color. I can illustrate this to you in a racial term if you like.

I remember a time when a Black mother was a fearsome thing. I can recall a friend of mine, a black girl from Chicago, getting sassy with her mother. It was like a storm had been unleashed and her mother didn’t care who was watching while she tore into her daughter making certain she understood she wasn’t ever going to talk like that again to her mother.

Compare that to what I saw in the grocery store not long ago. Black daughter about fourteen and obviously not thrilled to be in the grocery store with her mother is told by mom to get off her cell phone. Daughter ignores her and keeps talking. The mom again says, “Get off the phone, girl.” Daughter sneers and says to whoever is on the phone, “I have to go, Mom is in bitch mode again.”

Now I know what I would have done. Phone would have been knocked out of that little bitch’s hand and I would have humiliated her on a level that made certain she would never do it again. Not this Black mom though, she just said, “Watch your mouth.”

So you see, stupidity is color blind. The rampant lack of personal responsibility is color blind. Basically 99% of what is wrong with our society is color blind. Until people wake up and realize the left thrives on this sort of friction things will stay the same. Until Blacks wake up and realize the liberals politicians (black and white) who pander for their vote have zero interest in seeing their success. Why would they? If they keep you poor and dependent on them for food, money, and housing they own you. It is a different type of slavery, but it is slavery nonetheless. The chains that bind you are softer, but they are chains nonetheless.

Election years arrive and they make certain to tell you the other guy is going to take away your food stamps and your medicaid. They make sure to promise you better jobs and higher wages. They make sure to tell you the reason you are living on government assistance and your men are in prison is because you are victims of racism. The key word there is victim, folks.

Well done. You said some of the things that need to be said, but I bet you have more to say.

I agree that a large part of all our social problems is from “spare the rod and spoil the child” mixed with a society that improves for each generation. Add in a lack of death on a large scale – cures for disease, only minor and rare wars – and we’ve bred the toughness out of people. Toughened folks don’t sweat the little stuff, but they do take care to fix the big problems. They also learn about sacrifice, altruism, selflessness, etc.

Nicely done. Rachel has a great post on this, also.
