Our last bloody mouth incident was a Ripstick injury. #2 fell and busted his lip on his teeth. He lay in the street crying like a little girl until I got to him. It actually looked okay just bled profusely. He didn't even want ice. He went to bed later and woke up looking like Raging Bull! It looked like he'd been bitch slapped with brass knuckles. I thought for sure the school was gonna send CPS. He's back to beautiful, now.

CPS must have a file on us, though. We once went to the ER twice in three days for facial lacerations on two different boys - I just KNEW they thought we were beating them. The saving grace was the same male nurse was on duty both times and he's the father of four boys himself. He knows how it is.

My DamageMagnet Spawn was The Boy. When he was about 4 we lived in Germany (former USAF here) and had a house with a narrow spiral staircase made of slick and heavily polished wood. The kids were constantly told not to run on the stairs.

Well, one day I'm coming up from the basement just in time to hear him running full speed down the stairs from the top floor. Just as the words "Stop RUNNING!" were coming out his feet--clad only in socks--went out from him when he was half way to the second landing. He back flipped completely head over heels and landed on the second landing flat on his back. I scramble up with visions of a shattered spine and certain paralysis if not death on my mind. I bent down careful not to move him and asking over and over "Are you ok!!?" Through a raspy voice strained because his wind had been knocked out of him he replied.
"Hey dad, you see that flip? Cool huh?"
Total injuries were hurt pride, knocked out wind and my near heart attack. How he has survived to 19 I'll never know.
