Sunday Observation #1…

By jen

I have been meaning to post about this for a while and just haven’t been able to keep it in my mind long enough.  I have children, sue me.  I use to be an intellectual.

Observation:  Firefox 3 Sucks Shit

I have been a Firefox girl for a while now.  I love tabs and having been exclusively a Mac user up until about a two years ago, it was the one browser other than that Shitbag Netscape which offered me Tabbed Browsing.  I cannot funtion without tabs.

Like everyone else I downloaded the new Firefox a few weeks back and started using it and this is what I have discovered… I hate it.

  • It is slow to load pages which it use to handle quickly and efficiently.

  • It crashes on me at least three times a day.

  • It shits all over my desk when I try to load a link to a .pdf.  I fucking hate that!

  • I do not like the new back/forward then little down arrow on the navigation AT ALL.  I want to hold down which ever one I need and see the immediate history as I could before.

  • I am not a big fan of what it did to the autofil display on the address bar.  I am sure some folks love this, I am not one of them.

  • For whatever reason they managed to screw with the tabs as well.  In the previous version when I was in Google reader or any page that is set to open links in a black window/tab that tab would not be automatically the active tab.   There is no setting for this in the tools that I can locate.  I have the one which says “When I open a link in a new tab switch to it immediately” toggled OFF so it isn’t that.  That function does work properly and when i right click to open link in a new tab it is not activated.  I thought maybe it was a Google Reader setting, but nope.  Maybe this is the way it should be and my previous version had a bugged that really worked for me?

Anyway, I am not pleased and am thinking about going back to Firefox 2.whatever.yes

Makes me glad that I’m a luddite.  I never bothered with 3 until I got reactions, and a lot of people seem to hate 3, so I’m staying at 2.

100% agree…Firefox 3 SUCKS!  I am sick of seeing my browser crash 4-5 times a day at least (particularly at Ace of Spades…it’s like a guarantee of crash-i-ness upon each visit).
I actually occasionally go back to IE 7 now, because I’m a masochist.

Safari FTW!!!

For the tab focus thingy…. Under options switch check the box for switching focus when opening a new tab (yes, I know bear with me).  Go open a link in  a new tab (you know middle mouse button will do that right?). See it switch focus annoyingly. Close new tab.  Go to options and uncheck the box. Open a link in a new tab now and all should be goodness.

When 3.0 is installed over 2.0 the option and the UI get out of sync.  If it works speak kindly of me.

Your humble ex-fighter pilot/ex-programmer and now pointy haired manager-Jenreader.

P.S. If you aren’t afraid to walk on the dark side of Firefox I can coach you through some of the settings in about:config that can help performance.

I’m annoyed with Firefox 3 as well.  None of my damn plugins work.  I want my freaking mouse gestures back!
And the autofill thing-sucks monkey balls
that is all

I installed FF3 all by itself, not on top of FF2. I have not had a crash yet.
type about:config in the address bar. That opens up your config file. scroll thru it until you find
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
and set that value to 0. You will never have an autofill again.
More hints on playing with autofill here

Um, just Right Click either arrow and its history pops up. You don’t HAVE to use the little down arrow.
I’m not totally clear on your Tab issue, but there are zillions of forums for tweaking FF3 if Faith+1’s solution doesn’t solve your problem.  FF3 is pretty easy to modify even if you aren’t a computer programmer type.
This Link may help with your .pdf problems. I added the Adobe Add-In and I don’t have any problems.
