Calling All Winos…

By jen

I have decided I need to become a wino.  So I am putting a Demure call out to all my readers who drink, which is probably the lot of you sots, to make some good suggestions.

What I know I like:

  • Sweet

The more like boones it is the better.  ;)

I hate Merlot.  Tastes like it belongs on a salad.

I have one here which was a gift which I love called Gewurztraminer.  Yeah, these Germans makes good shit.

Lemme know…

Sweet? Riesling. A white wine and very sweet. I like it myself. Personally, I find the German Riesling best followed by Italian then California. Aussie Riesling is not good.  I’ve been able to find both the German and Italian in the wine section of Publix grocery store so it’s not hard to find.

Another sweet wine is Japanese Plum wine. You can try a glass at any sushi place.

I am not much of a wine person, but i agree with the Rieslings,

I prefer Bourbon, but I drink a lot of Vodka, and if I run out Gin.

Can’t help you, I hate sweet wines…especially rieslings. I’m more interested why you’ve suddenly decided that wine is the way to go.

Personally, I prefer a dry red.  But if you like sweet, go check out some Muscat Canelli.  Rieslings are a good choice as well.  A chenin blanc might be good too.

Well, Gabriel…

There is something more civilized about my having two glasses of wine at night as compared to a pair of tequila slammers.

Honestly, I have not been sleeping well.  Stress, work, etc… i find it just slows me down and makes me a sleepy.  I am a cheap drunk. ;)

Ice wine.  Yes, it’s crazy expensive, but it’s usually worth it.

As far as whites go, I’m particularly fond of Jezebel’s blends.  The name is cool too, ha!  The whites from Woop Woop are pretty decent, too.  Gets my husband lit, anyway.

If you really like sweet, I’d stick with German. I love a good Gewurztraminer or Reisling. Schmidt Sohne Riesling Spatlese is very nice and Llano makes a nice Gewurztraminer and both can be gotten at your friendly neighborhood HEB.  I remember in the good old days the first wines I drank (after the whole Boone’s Farm collection and the Bartles and James spectrum…) was Black Tower and Blue Nun. Yeah, not the classiest of wines, but they were inexpensive and actually weren’t terribly bad if I can remember that far back. I agree with the plum wine suggestion, too – it’s awesome with sushi or spicy foods – it warms you right up, too. The same goes for Sangria. Actually, making a pitcher of sangria every few days would be kind of nice – you do love your spicy foods…

I also like reds with a peppery taste/finish. I believe that Marquez de Casa Concha Cabernet is pretty nice – it’s Chilean (Concha y Toro) and we have had really good luck with Chilean wines. Texan winery Cap Rock has some good wines – they used to have a great 2002 special blush, but you can’t find it anymore. Be careful, because they’re not all good.

Also, I like Champagne, but I hate it when it is so dry it tastes like skunky air. I really prefer sweeter sparkling wines like Italian Asti’s, since I generally have a sparkling wine with something like chocolate strawberries or some other dessert. Sparkling Rose’s are also nice – I’ve had a couple of glasses on a friend’s suggestion at dinner a couple of times, but don’t remember what it was – it’s kind of trendy, I think. Then there’s always Cold Duck if you really don’t care about the whole classy thing at all. Actually, if you are just drinking for your own enjoyment, don’t let anyone make fun of your choice. Drink from a box if you like the taste. However, it is fun to learn about wines. I’ve been to a couple of fun, informal tasting parties and it was amazing how you could love a cheap wine and an expensive wine equally for completely different reasons. It doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyed. Buy the six-pack special at HEB and try several until you find one you want to stick with.

I always hated champaign then Kat chose one for my wedding last year.  Chandon Blanc de Noir is inexpensive at about 20 bucks a bottle and absolutely delicious.  We had NONE left on any of the tables and everyone enjoyed it.  I need to get another bottle!

Sweet baby lord, another sweet wine lover! Wahooo!

You’ll want to get your hands on a late harvest Gewurztraminer one day too. Your tongue will thank me. Ha!

In fact, late harvest anything is definitely worth a  go.

Rieslings are not made equal, trust me, they can be dry as opposed to sweet. You’ll want to try a late harvest one of those too.

My all-time fave late harvest Gewurztraminer is from the Three Rivers winery.

Stuff gets pricey because sweeter wines take more work. And darn it, you can’t really drink a little, save it for the next night, drink more, save, etc. Sweet wine tends to go bad faster. Still love ‘em though!

If you really want to treat yourself one day, try an icewine. Or look at the label to see if the residual sugar is labeled too. If they have residual sugar, you’re probably getting a sweeter wine.

Several days ago, we finished off a bottle of Tall Horse Sauvignon Blanc 2006 that was mighty tasty.  We enjoyed it over the course of a few days, a glass here, a glass there.

Tonight, I’m finishing off a bottle of Delta Sauvignon Blanc 2007 because it’s not that tasty and I don’t want to feel obliged to have a glass here and there over the next several days.

I can respect a frugal alcoholic… kudos.

You callin me an alcoholic?! :P

I can still make sense of your godawful captcha, I must not be that tipsy…

Alice, being drunk actually HELPS with the captcha.  I hate it too but it works better than any i have ever used.  must be cuz it is so fucking frustrating.

I only hate the captcha when I have to refresh it five times to get one I can read.  Like the one right now, I have no idea what the second…I hesitate to call it a word…is.

honestly i think it has a thing where if you get most of it right it works.  i know i have typed stuff wrong before and it posted
