She Can See!
Daughter No. 3 was sent home from school the other day with a letter saying, “Your daughter is blind as a bat!”
Well not exactly. It said she had failed the vision screening with 20/100 and 20/80 in her little peepers. So of course, being the amazing mother that I am… I freaked. WHAT!? So today we went to see Dr. Disken, the world’s greatest optometrist and owner of Today’s Eyes the world’s best place to buy delicious eye glasses… more on my eyeglass fetish later.
Little Bit was a trooper, she is a quirky girl like her mom and was pretty excited about the idea of glasses. Daughter No 2 would have been in fits, not Number 3 though… she is unique! Sure enough, she is 20/100 in both eyes uncorrected. Poor baby. She hasn’t seen the board in the front of the classroom ever. I feel horrible for not noticing this, but I will survive. Anyway…
We proceeded to get her some glasses and she is The Shit! She chose a pretty funky, dark blue horn rim plastic pair with spiffy flowers on the arms. Very mod… very cool. I let her choose, she has to wear them. Two hours later… voila! She can see! She was like, “Wow!” Pobrecita, mami… So to assuage my guilt and becuase she is too freakin’ cute to begin with, I said, “Would you like a celebratory frappucino from Starbuck’s?”
“Yes! YES!” she says delighted and still pointing out, “I see read that sign! I can see that bird! Wow look the leaves on the tree!” All the while my guilt getting into a knot in my gut.
We walked over to Starbucks and the young lady in her own spiffy retro glasses says, “What can I get you?”
I said, “We are celebrating our first pair of glasses and actually being able to see!”
She looked down at Skinny Minnie and said, “Those are cool glasses!”
Little Bit says, “I would like a tall, decaf, caramel frappucino with extra whip!” Yes, she knows how to order at Starbucks… I am a good mother and that is an important skill to have by age 5 and she is 8, so a pro.
The young lady says, “Coming right up and its my treat!”
What a nice girl. She made the Munchkin’s day. Some gal sitting and reading the paper was listening and when we walked out she says, “Love the glasses, young lady!” Needless to say, Daughter #3 thinks she is The Shit, and well… she is.
Now… back to Eyeglass porn. I use to be a big LaFont girl and previous to that Oliver Peoples. Recently I have become obsessed with Chrome Hearts brand. Dear God! It takes me about 5 minutes to rationalize 800 bucks for frames, I am that sick when it come to glasses. LOVE THEM. So some visual stimulation for you…
Here is a gallery with most of their frames.
The names amuse me to no end…
Names like: Alpha, Cooze, Dilf, Dismembered, Drilled, Filled, First Facial, D Sanchez, Herass, If You C Kay, M Diver I, Jablome, Gittin Any?, and Stroked.
Yeah, you gotta admire a company who makes stuff this amazing, this expensive (avg about 850 a pair most are sterling silver) and still get away with this naming convention.
LOVE THEM!

Heh. I think that’s great that she’s all excited, and mostly that she can see. I remember my first pair when I was in the second grade, and I had the same reaction going home, “holy moly, I can see!!”
But I looked like a dork. Bet she looks great.

Awww…I wanna see a pic of Little Bit with her glasses!
We’ve been pretty rigorous about getting our kidzes eyes checked, since our oldest is now close to the age when my husband was discovered to be blind as a bat. We make a game out of waiting at the optometrist, where the kids get to try on glasses, so they’re both excited to be getting glasses someday.
I swear, if I ever go in for the massive makeover, I’m taking you and alexthechick along with me. Between your glasses fetish and her shoe fetish and everything that I’m sure is in between, I’d be stylin head to toe.
And yes, knowing how to order frufru coffee is essential. My son has been able to order “a tall nonfat vanilla steamer, 120 degrees, no whip” since he was three.

Alice, the Jen, she loves the Choo’s, too.
Jen, I just got the same report back from the nurse for my Baby A. We just went to the ophthalmologist in June. All were fine, but he said that he could see that the possibility for nearsightedness was great in all of them. Somehow, my kid went from fine to blind since June. I have an appointment for him coming up. He is thrilled about glasses – also he will get the sports goggles, too – the big trend for the guys. So he’ll have glasses and braces. He gets the braces in January. Great.
Those Chrome Hearts are beautiful. I have a thing for fleur de lis (I like iron crosses, too). I saw a pair of Kathy Van Zeeland Sunglasses that were discontinued online black with a silver, crystal fleur at the temples. I had to have them. However, since I have like 20 pair of sunglasses and my history proves that the more expensive the glasses the more likely I am to break or lose them, I refuse the pay more than like $35 for them. I searched and the cheapest I could find them was $65. Damn. Shortly after I had done my extensive Internet search, I was in Marshall’s and happened to scan the sunglass rack as I was waiting to checkout with some home design accessory or another…there they were. The coveted fleur de lis sunglasses. I figured they had to be in my cheapskate price range at Marshall’s so grabbed them up and I looked at the tag, when I spyed the red clearance tag – the were on CLEARANCE for $5.00! Five freaking dollars! Made my whole damn month. I love those glasses. Now I know if I ever breakdown and wear real glasses (I know I need them, but I am not blind and the Rx is mild) I’ll get those Chrome Hearts. Another introduction of great fashion from Jen. Thanks!
