Well, Shit Vol 2.

By jen

We are home for a few days.  I am working up to a big blog about this whole experience as it relates to the future of an Obamacare world.  Needless to say I have spouted phrases over the days in the hospital to the effect of, “Excuse me, but we do not have Obamacare yet.  I am a paying fucking patient with private fucking insurance stop fucking around and get this shit done.”  I am just too damn tired to do that post and since we are still mid saga so to speak I will hold off for the “epic”.

So, we are home as I said and she is almost normal with regard to pancreatic enzyme levels.  She is not, however, fixed.  We will get to the “fixing” end of next week for reasons that will be made clear in my Ode to Bullshit in Healthcare.  Wednesday we do a HRCP which is some sort of MRI procedure to get a better look at the real estate etc for the ERCP they are going to do on Friday.  Likely we are dealing with scar tissue from the gallstones she passed four years ago.  Possible she has some congenital narrowing at some point in the tube the bile or whatever is coming through.  She has no gall bladder but apparently you can still make sludge and whatnot without one.  The plan is to either remove the scar tissue or if that isn’t possible put a stint into the tube to stretch it out. Unlike the kind of stints they put in the heart etc these are temporary so either they come loose and pass through her system or they go in and take it out no less than six weeks later.   Downside to these procedures is everytime she has a one she is at risk for another pancreatitis attack and that is pain and just generally a crapfest.

We were sent home with a prescription digestive enzymes (which no one has in stock at a single drugstore within in a 20 mile radius of me so we are getting them tomorrow) and a low fat diet.  I asked how long we had to do the 20g of fat a day diet.  Doc says, “forever”.  Oh my.  So guess what?  My family is now a low-fat family.  After talking with the dietitian it is not as bad as it sounds.  As she grows the number of fat grams allowed goes up. It is essentially just a “healthy” diet.  Can you all say, “No cheese!”  Other than the appalling lack of cheese it is pretty easy for the kids.  There is not need to worry about sugars so she can carb up all she wants on rice and pasta.  Thankfully, the super rich off the chart fatty goodness I cook at the holidays isn’t on her list of favorite thins to eat.  So we are at least going to continue the oyster dressing and other goodies at the holidays.

Gilly says, “What?!  No chile con queso?!”  With a heavy heart I say, “No, mamita.. not more than a bite or two and even that is a waste of your fat grams.”  She says, “I blame Obama!”  That’s my girl!  She is a pistol and says that to amuse me anytime something breaks or is not as it should be she says, “I blame Obama!”  The future is safe with my children, friends… rest easy.

I will update periodically as things progress.  I want to thank everyone for the emails and the comments and the prayers.  I ask you keep her in your prayers over the next weeks as well.   It means a lot to me and my family and I will be back to my regularly scheduled bitch fest and stating the obvious soon.

All my vibes, you got them

Hope everything gets fixed right tomorrow !
She’s still in my prayers…..

Poor baby! I hope everything is fixed without further pain. My boys blame Obama for everything.

Yes, get her past this ASAP. And we are praying for the both of you. Under Obamacare this episode would be even worse.

Praying for you.  Come out the other side better

You’re exactly right.  Most hospitals are 20% or more below their recommended staffing levels RIGHT NOW because of Boomer nurses retiring; and Obamacare will have them quitting en masse.  I personally would rather drive a truck than work as a nurse under Obamacare, and I’m not alone.

“I blame Obama!”—what a great kid!  I love it.
All the best to you and yours.

I was writing a big long thing about how nurses are screwed by hospitals and unions, but after ranting for about 15 min I felt better. So I’ll sum it up with, “IF IT ISN’T OBAMBI’S FAULT NOW, IT WILL BE IN THE FUTURE!”

Lighting a candle for you and your family…

Hi
Sorry about your daughter. Good luck. I am a nurse.  Somethings the medical establishment seems not to let one know, which one should know are patient’s rights. They are important. Here are some patients rights, and you the mom have these too.
Right to refuse treatment, sometime the treatment is worse than the illness.
Right to refuse medication, what good a pain meds if you can’t shit.
Right to fire your doctor, this dose get results, but be careful, the replacement one may not be as good. Better to ask the staff, what they think, watching their face and rolling eyes than their mouth.
Right to review your medical chart. Ask to see all of them, from every lab report to every consult, review them all. This is most important. Yes I believe you can read and with the internet, determine, at least understand what is going on.  Don’t let them say “I will let the doctor know”, but you say its my right.  Knowledge is power, doctor speak is not that hard. When reading write those question, these question if not written to go away quickly. Upon next visit, pull the list, ask away.
This is what I remember, but for a better lists, just Goggle patient’s rights.
Also the reason that nurse are be crunched is not so much of retirement but of Obama and the economy. Elective surgeries are off, because when you loose a job, you loose your insurance, some think that its better keep those funds in the bank, thank used for co-pay. Even for those who have insurance, it never cover all. No elective surgeries, lower hospital incomes, causing hospital to lower cost, causing lower staff  level.
I must defend the nurses, they are truly blessed. I became a nurse after retirement from Nuclear Engineering. I figure how hard could it be? I have a master in nuclear. However to my surprise it was the hardest degree to obtain. What I found out later it was harder just being a nurse. At work, they never stop, always someone needs this or that of which there is not,  or worse some family bitching and demanding, yet they swallow hard and go on.  Treat all nurse as special, for they are. I can’t believe how little they are paid for all their responsibility, retained knowledge, and required physical labor. Because of these hardships, they must truly love their patients.   Be kind to them, they save more lives than all the others.
Sincerely yours,
RN Peter
PS I pray hard and will pray for her.

Jen,
   Prayers continuing …

But have you seen this?!  Some awesome clips we can have a lot of fun with!

I blame Obama, indeed!
I will add Gilly to our Catholic ladies group prayer list – I forgot last night when we had our meeting.
I hope she gets better soon and another attack is averted by the “cheeseless” diet. Life without cheese is so sad to contemplate!
After I had my gall bladder out, the symptoms actually got worse. It’s called Post Cholystectomy Syndrome. I never had stones or attacks, just discomfort from a non-functioning, sludgy gallbladder and tubes. I guess I’m lucky I’ve never gotten pancreatitis. I actually had a gallbladder attack when I was about 12 and that was awful! That poor little angel.

Peter:

In my blog post about this, the Epic one coming I will make a point of saying what I say now, the RNs on the ward at Methodist Children’s Hospital in san Antonio are probably some of the finest nurses I have ever dealt with.  They are wonderful and attentive and extremely proactive.  They were amazing with my daughter this time and the first time during a 18 day or so stay.  I have written to the hospital that they should use these women/men as a model for the rest of the hospital.

They work hard but never once did i see one exasperated with a request major or as minor as can she get some saltines?  All our troubles at the hospital both this time and last (though not as bad) occurred the moment we left the fourth floor ward.  I sent a food/fruit basket after we left last time and will probably send those nurses something this time.  The actual administration of the hospital is the problem.  Politics in the form of a bunch of mini monarchies in the hospital causing kinks in the process is the root of the problem.

my family will pray for you and your daughter!!!

Every time she has to pass the butter, without taking any, you all need to say, “I blame Obama”. Fascists like butter, but only when it is passed to THEM after you didn’t get any.

Prayers all around – I am too tired of the way too many non-medical people dithering into what should be none of their business and ruining what is the best system in the World.
I am the patient that as soon as they proclaim on high what is wrong with me – goes to the library and Internet and finds out exactly how wrong they are. The disease/condition du jour is usually their diagnosis – and they aren’t hitting it right.
Imagine my surprise while in the office to be told one thing – must do this (another 2 appointments – think co-pays and covering what my insurance won’t pay) and then they also do another completely different test – walla I get a call three weeks later – everything is fine (but I was on deaths door just 3 weeks ago) – Good thing I did not schedule those extra wasteful appointments. And also a good thing I went to the library and found out how wrong they were.
Medicine by politics – only to be profoundly worse with Obamacare. BTW, American Spectator has a wonderful piece about a convicted murderer scamming Medicare for $596,953 – for ‘medical supplies’ – With Obamacare – expect this and worse – And imagine how many needy people could have gotten simple basic care for that scam alone.
Best wishes in the coming week & medical issues.

She says, “I blame Obama!”  That’s my girl!

Palin/Gilly 2012

Some long time friends found out that their daughter had some rare disease that meant she could never eat protein again. Weird, weird, weird. Guess she can’t metabolize it or something…don’t remember details but do remember too many near death experiences in their family.
Personally, I love butter and do not understand why there have been no butter gods in history…and honestly, any religion that says you can’t eat bacon (obvious answer here) or use butter (Hindu) has bad gods. I will pray for your daughter and family that you are able to enjoy the new cuisine. Eventually the government will try to force everyone to eat a certain way, so I guess you get a head start.

MMMM  mmm MMMM buttah!!

ps: good vibes for the O’NothingDidItKid.

She’s awesome—so are you.

I recently changed my diet to a “healthy” one as well-(no dairy)- it’s been a challenge to say the least. My best discovery yet—Daiya Cheese!! non-dairy, super low fat, and it melts! I hate other fake cheeses because they taste too much like soy. But Daiya tastes like the real thing—and they make the best grilled cheese sandwiches, pizzas, and quesadillas. Zpizza ( if there is one in Texas) uses Diaya on their veggie pizza. Also—Earthbalance is the best non-dairy butter. Best of luck to you and your little one!
