We had a nice Christmas. No catastrophic drama this year, thank God. A funeral director once told me that there are 3 things that bring out the worst in families: births, marriages, and funerals. You have relatives getting together that sometimes rarely see each other, or avoid each other the rest of the time and the sparks fly. Said his job was never boring. I think I'd add Thanksgiving and Christmas to that list. Relatives attending only because the fallout for Not attending is a big deterent.
Last but not least, my heart goes out to the people who, for whatever reason, have no one to spend the holidays with, and/or feel heartbroken each Christmas and they absolutely Dread it. The holiday cannot come and go fast enough for them.

Awesome as usual - I will not comment on Mass (possibly the only non-Catholic who goes to Mass a lot - family issue). I do love the German one downtown - I spend so much time attempting to translate that the hour just whizzes by. I do not however like the Latin one - I think that is related to the summer of my 8th year when for some reason my two older sisters decided to marry within two weeks of each other (competition does have it's down side). So we had a Catholic Mass and an Episcopal Mass (which all upteen children were part of the wedding 'party' - whoever came up with the terms was a sadist of the nth degree) - let's just say both events were awful and became a suppressed memory (sadly as is most of my childhood).
I received a Pulse Live Scribe - me the techno-retard. I can't wait until the masses (i.e. hubby and two adult children) wander back to their respective school/caves so that I can take back my life and actually put it to good use.
Meanwhile the Mother decided to do a dress rehearsal of her deathbed event and we were all called to the hospital (the day after we drove 5 hours in the snow returning from seeing the newest and 6th (or is it 7th or 8th?!?) most beautiful child born in America. So off I trudge - by about 1PM - I am just so disgusted that the other two surviving siblings are basically - good riddance and not coming. Look I have no love lost for the harbinger of most of my neurosis (or is that neurosi?) but I do know what is the right thing to do and when to suck it up and do it. The news of her impending death was greatly exaggerated (which is also a family tradition).
So all I can say is - Happy New Year - it has to be better than the one we just went through.

(agree with your assessment of the 'oh so modern' mass)

my fondest memory of Christmas Eve Mass was when son #2 was a rude 13yr old.

they have this horrible 'band' that plays... the director thinks he's johnny mathis.

that particular night, he sang a solo. it was so appallingly terrible there was a horrible silence as his reedy off-key notes finally came to an end.

as that horrified extended silence dragged on enveloping the enormous church, the kind where you could hear a pin drop, one young male voice piped up,

"Dayyyy-um...."

...don't go to mass anymore but, having been raised a catholic, I can certainly appreciate what you are saying about how they handle these special masses.
Personally, I loved the incense but didn't love the spiritual vacuity of too many of the sermons and special messages.
Do they really want to attract the unemployed?? WTF-didn't attracting gays and leftists during the vietnam draft dodger days teach them a lesson? God have mercy.

I got off easy. Dumped the kids, wife and psychomom-in-law at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve mass because I still had to get the dinner ready. Yes, sometimes I think, therefore I am a genius. Two hour mass? I'd have been doing more than tweeting--awesome BTW. Happy New Year, Jen.

OK, I "got here" by following one blogsite to another and then to still another. "Xavier's Thoughts" to "daybyday" (by Chris Muir); Xavier is an RN who blogs about trauma nursing, bicycling, dogs, and guns and has a link to Chris Muir's site.

I am fascinated by the pearls I find buried deeply inside some blogsites; yours is one. Glad Santa was good to everyone. Yours' looks like a happy family.

Best wishes for the New Year,

Glad to hear your Christmas was great. Not too bad here except for the youngest had a stomach illness before Christmas and gave it to the oldest for her post-Christmas pleasure. I managed to escape it. I'm not Catholic, so no mass for me, however, my church has a Christmas hymn festival each year and I was the organist for it this time. It was a lot of fun and good music. Hope your New Year is great!

Jen...i have a kindle and it is great. A lot of the older books which are past copyright are free! Newer books are generally under ten bucks. Also, some blogs are on kindle (HINT HINT). Loved the picture of your family. Have a great 2010...the year we start to take this country back!
